Mexican Insurance
I used to live in Southern California. I have probably been to Mexico more than a dozen times. Most of the time we just drove across the border into Tijuana, but once we drove almost 10 hours down the coast of Mexico. It wasn’t until today that I realized that I might need Mexican Insurance when I travel there!
US auto insurance is not recognized in Mexico, so all those times that I drove across the border I was taking a risk. Mexico’s car accident laws are a bit different than those in the United States. If you are found guilty in a traffic accident, it is consider a felony and you can be held until all the damages are paid in full! So unless you are carrying a lot of cash with you, or you have a wealthy relative back in the States that could wire you the money, you could be in deep trouble.
Your medical insurance may not cover you as well. Be sure to check before you go. If it does not, your can purchase temporary medical insurance that is good while you are in Mexico.
Next time I drive to Mexico I will be sure to get a quote on Mexican auto insurance before I travel.

Very true!! I work for State Farm and we will cover drivers 50 miles into Mexico. I’m not sure how far Tijuana is from the border, but if you are going there, you might want to check with your insurance company and see if the 50 miles into Mexico rule might apply to you as well.
