My Musical Family
My Grandma Taylor was born in 1900. In her twenties they would hire her to play the background music on the piano for the local silent movies. She was also the organist for the church for a very long time. I don’t remember her playing much since she had bad arthritis when I was a kid. However, she encouraged her children to play musical instruments. Her son, my dad, started with the clarinet and can also play the flute and saxophone. He was a very good musician and played in a couple of local jazz bands. My mom played the piano. The rule at our house was the everyone had to play a musical instrument. I played the flute, my brother the trumpet and the french horn, my first sister the clarinet, my second sister the french horn and my younger brother the drums.
The only one of us that really stuck with it was my sister Shirlee who played the French Horn. She went on to get a degree in music performance and I have seen her perform in a number of orchestras and pit orchestras for plays. This summer she was playing in Les Miserable and I took my girls to see it. My younger daughter now wants to play the French Horn just like her Aunt Shirlee!
My older daughter has been taking the violin for 5 years now and really enjoys it. Rachel is going to start on the Cello next year. If I got everyone in my family together we would have quit the musical band!

Neither my husband or I are musical but we would love for our
children to play an instrument. I love listening to the violin!

That’s really neat. I did not come from a musical family which may be why I never got very good at the violin and why I haven’t picked it up in a couple of years.

I was forced to learn the piano as a child…but I’m glad about it now.

I love when parents encourage children to learn music instruments. I played clarinet and saxophone through high school and picked up the bassoon my senior year. I also learned viola. I stuck with the bassoon through college, but didn’t go any further with my music after I decided I didn’t want to be a music teacher. I’m going to get my clarinet fixed one day and see if I can’t find a community band to join. I really miss playing.

That’s very cool. Our whole family is musical as well. Except my kids. They have no interest in learning to play any, they just like listening to it.

the only instrument I ever mastered was my voice. It was quite good before I ruined ti with a two-pack+ per day habit. The only other musically-inclined family member was my brother, who played guitar.

My 8 year old is leaning toward a lot of musical interest, we’re trying to get him to choose something to learn to play. I only wish that the public schools had better music and art programs.

Well, I’m sure the whole family can play a storm during festive seasons like Christmas and New Year’s day!
